We’ve all heard our uninitiated out-of-province friends complain about the lack of topography in the Saskatchewan landscape, and frankly, it’s getting pretty old. You can rail against the old colloquialism (yea, we have a couple of hills/valleys), but let’s face it: Saskatchewan IS pretty flat.
Yes, so flat we could probably fax the province.
Yes, so flat that walls are jealous.
We know. We like it here.
However, constantly defending the place to people who just don’t get it can get tiring, so we’ve created a list of suggestions to fall back on the next time you’re asked “bUt wHaT cAn yOU Even DO tHeRe”.
1.Stand
Now I don’t mean to start off with something so wild and outrageous, but you better believe that flat land is the perfect place to exploit standing. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, get your two feet ready to stand hard on these prairies. Pretty much all we Sask people do all day is stand. Everywhere you look, you’re gonna find people standing. If it’s good enough for the cows, it’s good enough for us. Feeling a bit more daring? Try looking off into the distance for effect (note: standing is not a flat ground exclusive — try it anywhere! Practice at home!)
2. Levitate**
It doesn’t just stop at standing. You can take those feet and defy the laws of gravity by levitating for a solid second in the air. In regions with elevation you may fall, but there are no worries about falling here — it’s literally impossible, because the ground is flat as ever.Spice this one up by doing something crazy, like throwing your hands in the air and waving them like you just don’t care– maybe try waving to a friend in the next town over!
3. Dig a hole
Get your shovels ready because this one’s a classic! Flat ground means lots of dirt, and lots of dirt means lots to shovel! Ah, nothing beats a good dig. And if you’re thinking ‘why would I want to do that?’, turn that attitude around! It’s more like why wouldn’t I want to do that, am I right?? Think of all the great things that come with shoveling– buried treasure, piles of dirt, a hole in the ground. Honestly a win-win situation: you dig a hole, the ground gets a hole. Everybody wins.
4. Sit
Now this one’s kind of a hidden gem. Not many people think of this when on flat ground, but as it turns out flat ground makes the perfect chair. I mean, what else do you need then some leveled surface to rest your behind. Try doing that in the west coast, I dare you, you’ll probably slide down a slope.
West coast best coast? More like the legendary prairie!
5. Drive
As it turns out, mixing an engine with wheels can move you forward pretty fast (Newton’s second law working it’s magic). So why not take this new-fangled invention and take a ride on the wild side… on flat ground.
Most importantly make sure you stay on the trans-Canada highway because you’ll definitely see all of Saskatchewan that way!
Bonus points if you’re driving a tractor.
Honestly, there is SO MUCH to do here! Whether you’re hiking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, star gazing, photographing wildlife or just appreciating a good sunset, there are LOADS of things you can do on the flat ground — the sky is the limit ( and you can literally see it for miles).
